OMG! Who is that?!

In our very humble opinion, blogging is about expressing yourself and having fun (take a look at our picture!) Actually, that's what we think weddings should be too - an opportunity to express yourself and your love for each other and to ensure that your family and friends are having the best time! While our photojournalistic approach often means we are out-of-sight and out-of-mind, when it comes to the "family pictures" and our stunning dramatic poses, we are all about it being fun, comfortable and painless!

Green Sofa Engagement Shoot

In an Artäge Pictures first, this sneak peek of Sandra & Carlo’s engagement shoot will actually be a video clip! But first, some background:

On August 10, 2008, we got this message through Facebook:

“I know we do not know one another, but you have done some photography for a friend of mine, April. I just wanted to say that your shots are beautiful - I’m sure you’ve heard this many times. You have mastered the silhouette and I admire the creativity of your shots. As someone only beginning photography, I look up to your ability to truly capture moments….

I will certainly consider you when the time comes for my wedding!

Again, my compliments!

Sandra”

Yes, that Sandra and consider us she did! We’re shooting their wedding in December!!!

When Sandra + Carlo booked us, we had already launched our Artäge productions and they were very interested. As we got closer to their date, we started dabbling in a new style of engagement shoot - what we now call a “Themed Engagement Shoot”. Here at our studio, we have a menu of ideas that we think will make for crazy creative engagement shoots and on that list were the words, Green Sofa.

So what’s with this green sofa? Anyone who knows Steve knows that he loves old, retro things. Friends of ours, actually past clients, Cyn + Ian, called us to let us know that when they bought their new house the previous owner left a very old, slightly smelly, cool looking sofa. They actually looked into having it restored but the cost was too high so it was either chuck it out or call Steve. Yes, we dragged this thing back and stored it, waiting for the right couple, or should we say, waiting for Sandra + Carlo?! :)

So the idea started with a kind of “Trash The Sofa” theme. We knew the final stage would be in the water and we all agreed that a corn field would be cool too. In our engagement shoot consultation, we also discovered that Sandra + Carlo are big movie fans and that Carlo was a teacher. Naturally, a drive-in theatre and high school were quickly added to the itinerary.

A big thank you to Todd and Brian from Five Drive-In Theatre in Oakville for letting us sneak in during the day for a few photos. And also a big thank you to Carlo’s school for letting us drag this sofa around the halls. To the students, we apologize and the smell should be gone by second term.

Finally, a big thank you to Sandra and Carlo! Sandra took the day off work, they rented a pick-up truck, they gathered props, they embarrassed themselves and most all, they were a heck of a lot of fun to be with. The cappuccinos from Starbucks really sealed the deal though!

So why a video clip? Themed engagement shoots go hand-in-hand with a guest book or signature book. We did a series of stop-motion photography scenes which we thought (and still do) that they’ll look great in the final album. But the clips were just too funny to not share with our readers so we quickly put this together!

Without further ado, a sneak peek of Sandra + Carlo’s Green Sofa Engagement Shoot!

Nikki + Jeff | Engagement Shoot Niagara Falls | Sneak Peek

So you quickly peeked at the pictures before reading this and you said to yourself, “Hey, I recognize those two?!” No, they’re not supporting characters from the Twilight movies but they are famous here on our blog!

Jeff is the brother of Katherine, a la Katherine + Steve, so his face already appeared here in 2008. And both Jeff and Nikki were a part of Tracy + Sean’s bridal party for their destination wedding in Costa Rica! Well, three times a charm because Jeff is here again (Nikki you have a bit of catching up to do!) and these are their engagement photos!

Jeff and Nikki love Niagara Falls…well, specifically the casino but still, they love to walk around Clifton Hills, have gauchos serve them meat at Copacabana (a wicked Brazilian restaurant!) and heck, they sometimes even walk down and see the falls…it is a wonder of the world you know!

So it’s no surprise that they choose Niagara Falls for their engagement shoot. They were torn about doing the photos during the day or during the night as both gave different feels to the pictures. So we just did both! Starting just before sunset, we shot for an hour or so, then had dinner at…you guess it, Copacabana! then ventured out for about an hour of evening photos ending back at their hotel.

So what do most people think of when they think of Niagara Falls? Hmmm…water, Marilyn Monroe, Superman, weddings and dare we say…heart-shaped tubs?! Yes, the final shoot was inside their hotel room, a bottle of champagne and a bottle of bubbles at our ready. How could you do an engagement shoot in Niagara Falls and not have a heart-shaped tub shot?! :)

Jeff. Nikki. We had a blast and can’t wait for your wedding! We also can’t wait to meet your families and friends…AGAIN! Hope you love the pictures and we’ll have your guest book ready soon!

Humongous hugs,
Heidi and Steve

Krista + Chad | Engagement Artäge New York City | Sneak Peek

Last week we had the groovy task of flying to New York City to help Krista and Chad create their very own Artäge. Not only do they both LOVE New York, Chad actually proposed there last year, so it seemed the obvious choice for this elaborate engagement shoot!

As you know, our Artäges are unique and different from each other. We also try to have a loose narrative - something that ties the whole thing together. Since Chad is a big romantic and loves surprising Krista, we collectively decided that this Artäge would be a Date-Of-A-Lifetime, orchestrated by Chad keeping the lovely Krista completely in the dark.

Speaking of dark, the song that we’re going to use for this Artäge is called City At Night by Tracy Shedd. It’s a very moody, romantic song and as the title suggests, we shot everything at night.

In the following weeks, we will edit all of the images and video clips and post their final Artäge here on our blog. In the meantime, a brief background of what we did:

Chad and Krista met each other at Grand Central Station. We walked over to Times Square stopping whenever we came across a gorgeous location (not hard to do in Manhattan!) We then ventured over to the Rockefeller Plaza where they dined on chocolate covered strawberries and champagne (thank you Godiva!) While our intention was for dinner in Central Park, it was simply too dark so we instead opted for dinner in front of The Plaza Hotel with Central Park as our background. Finally, we hitched a ride in a NY taxi over to the Brooklyn Bridge where Chad presented Krista with a small gift from Tiffany’s!

You must be saying to yourself: “How in the heck did you plan, organize and execute such a complicated shoot by yourselves?!” We didn’t. A big, humongous thank you to Erica from Erganic Events who worked tirelessly with us, all night, to make this happen. Quite literally, we could not have done it without you Erica!

So, until the Artäge is ready for its big Debut, a few photos to whet your appetite!

Thank you Krista and Chad for including us and we very much look forward to your wedding next spring!

Sarah + Chris | Wedding Pictures | Sneak Peek

We must first apologize for the brevity of this post - we only got back from the wedding 12 hours ago and we’re hopping on a plane for New York for another event in just a few hours. Nevertheless, our enthusiasm for sharing the images with our clients takes precedence over mundane details like packing, etc. :)

Despite the constant threat of rain, and do keep in mind that this was planned as an outdoor wedding, Sarah and Chris kept remarkably calm. Much like the advice that we share with our clients before their wedding - plan all you want but when the day arrives, just go with the flow - Sarah and Chris did exactly that. The bride and groom often set the mood for the entire day and sure enough, everyone seems to be thoroughly enjoying themselves. Bravo Sarah and Chris!

Of course, they did have Gabrielle deMelo from Casamentos Haute Couture Wedding Design Inc., and she and her associate Coiri, did an amazing job of juggling and ultimately switching the details of this elaborate event on the fly. As Sarah and Chris said themselves, though many things needed to be changed at the last minute, the entire day and evening went seamlessly.  Bravo Gabrielle!

Everything took place at The Estates of Sunnybrook, McLean House, and while the rain toyed with us on and off, the heavy rain only began as we all headed inside for desserts and dancing. Whew! We suppose the only casualty of the rain was the ice cream truck that was arranged for the late-night sweet table. Many people braved the rain but poor Angelo, the owner and operator, was sometimes left alone in the pouring rain. Bravo Angelo! :)

We would like to wish Sarah and Chris great happiness and safe travels on their multi-stop honeymoon - first the Muskokas and then Hawaii - and to thank you for sharing your special day with us.

Humongous hugs,
Heidi and Steve
